They’re both very good, and they can complement each other. Training with weights (particularly dumbells) offers a very wide range of exercises for all body parts. Bodybuilders at my gym often do push-ups in addition to bench pressing with dumbells and barbells for the chest, and they often will do dips (for chest and triceps) or pull-ups (for the V-shaped back). There aren’t as many exercises using just body weight, so that’s why it’s good to also use weights. Of the two approaches, the weights will give better results.

Weights are better, because by doing your body weight with everything your strength will forever be limited to your bodyweight. With weights you can go beyond your body weight and thus get stronger than only BW strength. As far as getting more toned, I guess I can believe it to get toned you are supposed to do low weight, high reps and when you do a pushup or something that’s essentially what you’re doing.

Weights are superior because of the greater variety of exercises you can do and you can focus on specific muscles and muscle groups eaisier, but body weight exercises are valuable as well and are great for building a foundation.
