The BMI is just to let you know if you’re going to start having health problems because of your weight when you get out of the “healthy range”. You could add 35 pounds of pure fat to a normal body weight and still stay in the “healthy range” while you are disgusted by your reflection in the mirror…
If you’re 5″8′, for example, you can weigh between 125lbs and 160lbs. So the BMI has nothing to do with an ideal body weight and is completely irrelevant for muscular, athletic people anyway.
An ideal body weight will vary with the person gender and height, but mostly with the person’s level of activity which determine if you’re mainly made of fat or mainly made of muscles. Since muscles takes three times less space than fat, you’ll be much thinner, for the same height and weight.
You could be a woman with 17% fat and look very good because you’re an aerobics instructor. You could be a housewife who exercises and have a 22% body fat or you could be a working mom with no time to exercise, with a 32% body fat and hate yourself.
People always worry about losing weight when they should only be worry about gaining muscle weight. Once they get into shape, stronger with a higher metabolism, the extra fat will melt like snow in the sun without the need to worry about it.
An easy calculation (you can do by hand…) to give you an approximate ideal body weight would be the following:
1. Take your height in inches and deduct 60 (I don’t know about people shorter than 60 inches…)
2. Then, multiply that number by 5.
3. Then add 100 if you’re a woman and 110 if you’re a man.
The result will be the ideal weight in pounds.
For example, I’m a woman and my height is 5″5′:
1. 5″5′ is 65 inches to which I deduct 60 and get the number 5.
2. Then I multiply by 5 and get 25.
3. Then I add 100 and get 125lbs.
So my ideal weight is 125lbs.
I’m currently 120lbs but I’m working on gaining about 5lbs of muscle in the next year of so to get back into shape so I can eat more and not get fat.
Another example for a 6 feet tall guy:
72 inches minus 60 = 12 multiplied by 5 = 60 plus 110 = 170 pounds.
(woman, you add 100 at the end but men, you add 110)
Hope this helps.

just plug in your body information (weight, height) and the site will tell you what the ideal weight is for you.
THERE IS NO “IDEAL BODY WEIGHT”
“BMI” OR BODY MASS INDEX AS IM SURE YOU KNOW WAS MADE UP BY INSURANCE COMPANIES IN ORDER TO CALCULATE WHAT THEY SHOULD DO ABOUT PEOPLE’S INSURANCE. I KNOW PEOPLE WITH BMI’S THAT SAY THEY ARE MORBIDLY OBESE, BUT THEY ARE REGULAR MARATHONERS AND TRIATHALONERS.
BMI IS BS, IF YOUR A HEALTHY PERSON, YOUR A HEALTHY PERSON, AND NO INSURANCE COMPANY IS GOING TO SAY YOUR NOT.
Body Mass Index
