When People Starve Themselves, Why Does The Body Shed Water Before Fat?

last spring in my health class, i was told that when the body thinks it is starving, it sheds water weight before fat weight. i dont understand it because the body needs calories when it is starved and water has no calories/ energy in it. not only that, but couldnt shedding water weight dehydrate the body which would only lead to a faster death? this doesnt make any sense….could someone explain this please?

Fat takes a lot more energy to burn. And your body does not want to expend any more of its stored energy then it has to if you are not eating.
